Change?

Washington'sBlog: "Bush is correctly regarded as a lying, war-mongering, torturing tyrant. Is Nobel peace prize winner Obama even worse?
Many governments, U.S. congressmen and other individuals have demanded that Obama return his Nobel peace prize for bombing Libya without congressional approval.

Obama has increased the number of drone attacks in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere. Indeed, most people who have looked at the numbers believe that Obama has killed many more civilians with drone attacks than Bush did using the same method."

HuffingtonPost: "How is it that Congress isn't screaming at President Obama for usurping its power to take this nation to war against Libya? And if Congress isn't screaming, then why aren't we? We should be. The power to make war impacts us all: it kills, it costs our dwindling treasury, and it has serious consequences.

Obama's decision is another shocking example of his grab for the kind of executive power he eschewed in his predecessor's administration -- so long as he was still a candidate. Many of us had hoped that the ghost of Vietnam, our infamous Executive-made war, would be exorcised by this Nobel Peace Prize-winning President. Instead, Obama has brought this specter back from the dead."

VoltaireNet: "Through an exclusive Reuters dispatch, Mark Hosenball reveals that President Barack Obama gave the CIA the green light to undertake covert actions in support of the Libyan rebels.

According to the journalist, the order was signed before the vote on Resolution 1973. Washington thus endorsed a text which prohibits the very actions for which it had already given its approval."

AsiaTimes: "United Nations Security Council resolution 1973 has worked like a Trojan horse, allowing the Anglo-French-American consortium - and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) - to become the UN's air force in its support of an armed uprising. Apart from having nothing to do with protecting civilians, this arrangement is absolutely illegal in terms of international law. The inbuilt endgame, as even malnourished African kids know by now, but has never been acknowledged, is regime change.

All the worthy democratic aspirations of the Libyan youth movement notwithstanding, the most organized opposition group happens to be the National Front for the Salvation of Libya - financed for years by the House of Saud, the CIA and French intelligence. The rebel "Interim Transitional National Council" is little else than the good ol' National Front, plus a few military defectors. This is the elite of the "innocent civilians" the "coalition" is "protecting".

Right on cue, the "Interim Transitional National Council" has got a new finance minister, US-educated economist Ali Tarhouni. He disclosed that a bunch of Western countries gave them credit backed by Libya's sovereign fund, and the British allowed them to access $1.1 billion of Gaddafi's funds. This means the Anglo-French-American consortium - and now NATO - will only pay for the bombs. As war scams go this one is priceless; the West uses Libya's own cash to finance a bunch of opportunists Libyan rebels to fight the Libyan government. And on top of it the Americans, the Brits and the French feel the love for all that bombing. Neo-cons must be kicking themselves; why couldn't former US deputy defense secretary Paul Wolfowitz come up with something like this for Iraq 2003?"

ForeignPolicyJournal: "Just as for Serbia-Kosovo, for Libya, too, the West runs its usual propaganda. There is that reduction of the enemy to one person to be hated, using the Orwellian recipe of 1984;Milosevic, Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, and now Gaddafi.

The goals in Serbia in 1999 were clear: bombing state enterprises, not the privatized ones, to get hold of natural resources;and getting that huge military base, Camp Bondsteel, supporting a liberation army in Kosovo, with a track record of horrors. The weapons included cluster bombs and graphite bombs with depleted uranium to hit power stations and the like, with well known consequences."

TheGlobalRealm: "In twelve years the U.S. has used NATO for the war against Yugoslavia – the first unprovoked attack against a sovereign European nation since World War Two – a nearly decade-long air and ground war in Asia, and now the opening stages of a war in Africa. None of those wars were launched either to defend a member of NATO or in the so-called Euro-Atlantic area the military bloc arrogates to itself the right to protect.

21st century NATO is a global military strike force to be employed wherever its leading member states, the U.S. in the first case, choose to use it. Other nations in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Caucasus and even what is left of unsubjugated Europe had best take note of the fact."

Reuters: "The United States on Monday gave a green light to sales of Libyan crude oil from rebel-held territory, giving a potential boost to forces battling Muammar Gaddafi."

ChristianScienceMonitor: "In “The Tsunami of Change,” the feature that lends its title to the cover, Mr. Awlaki offers a sweeping refutation of international perception that revolutions in the Arab world, fueled by young secular, democratic movements, will be a setback for extremist groups.

“The outcome doesn't have to be an Islamic government for us to consider what is occurring to be a step in the right direction,” Mr. Awlaki writes. “Whatever the outcome is, our mujahideen [holy warrior] brothers in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and the rest of the Muslim world will get a chance to breathe again after three decades of suffocation.”

Libya's Muammar Qaddafi, along with former leaders Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak of Tunisia and Egypt, respectively, worked for decades to crush Islamist groups, which they saw as a threat."

WSWS: "The opposition forces in Libya attempting to march on Tripoli with the assistance of American, French and British bombs are far removed from the image of innocent civilians fighting for freedom and democracy promoted by the media and political circles.

This is made clear in a March 22 article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung by Gunnar Heinsohn, the author of Encyclopaedia of Genocide (Rowohlt, 1998).

Heinsohn cites a report by the well-known Zimbabwean journalist and documentary filmmaker Farai Sevenzo dealing with barbaric, pogrom-like massacres perpetrated by the so-called “rebels” against black African workers in Libya. The article states:

“Because mercenaries from Chad and Mali are presumed to be fighting for him [Gaddafi], the lives of a million African refugees and thousands of African migrants are at risk. A Turkish construction worker told the British radio station BBC: ‘We had seventy to eighty people from Chad working for our company. They were massacred with pruning shears and axes, accused by the attackers of being Gaddafi’s troops. The Sudanese people were massacred. We saw it for ourselves.’ ”"
