Twee keer stemmen

EUObserver: "Some European citizens have the possibility to vote twice in this week’s European Parliament elections.

If citizens live in another EU country, they can vote both in that country as well as in their country of origin.

No automatic controls are carried out at present to check that people do not use both their ballots - even though it would be considered election fraud to vote in more than one country.

But it is not only EU citizens with dual-citizenship who are being offered the opportunity to double their influence in politics.

Badeloch Noldus Lund, a Dutch citizen living in Denmark for three years, has also been sent a poll card to participate in the Danish elections but she would also be able to vote via the Internet in the Dutch elections.

EU legislation says that every citizen of the Union 'residing in a Member State' of which he or she is not a national now 'has the right to vote in the elections to the European Parliament on the same conditions as the nationals of that State'."

Bovenstaand bericht is gedateerd 10.06.04, tien jaar geleden. Intussen is er nog niets gedaan om deze vorm van fraude tegen te gaan. Ook is bekend welke groepen helemaal niet kunnen stemmen: het groeiende leger daklozen, te wijten aan het neoliberale beleid van bezuinigingen in Europa.

dakloos

EUObserver: "Before the start of the crisis in 2008, the figure was 116 million. Today, around 800,000 more children now live in poverty compared to five years ago.

“Some estimates foresee an additional 15-25 million people facing the prospect of living in poverty by 2025 if fiscal consolidation continues,” warns the ILO.

The European Commission, for its part, notes unemployment has increased to close to 26 million.

It says 5.3 million young people are jobless and around half of the unemployed have been without a job for more than a year."
